PREMISE & BASICS
?What is Beautiful Dreamer?
Beautiful Dreamer is an AU game based on the magical girl genre, with an original setting, story and magic system. Characters are AU'd into the world of BD and become Dreamers, magical warriors who are tasked with keeping the dreaming and waking worlds safe from that which would threaten it.
Beautiful Dreamer draws most of its thematic and aesthetic influence from all over the genre but mainly draws on stories from the "magical warrior" subgenre, such as Sailor Moon, Blue Reflection, Yuki Yuna is a Hero, Wonder Egg Priority and Sleepless Domain.
Many of its combat and power mechanics are adapted to DWRP from the magical girl tabletop system Radiant Hearts by kithecat, with permission and thanks.

?What kind of game is Beautiful Dreamer?
As mentioned above, Beautiful Dreamer is a full AU game (that is to say, not amnesia/memloss/reincarnation/etc) based on the magical girl genre. In terms of mechanics, it is split between combat and exploration based missions, dungeon exploration and slice-of-life happenings, with players and characters encouraged to invest themselves in both the mundane and fantastical parts of the setting. Mod-run event logs that cover the game's metaplot will be posted on schedule but players also have the freedom to run their own explorations and smaller plots within the setting and these may pay off in a big way!
The mundane half of the setting (i.e, the waking world) is intended to be a modern day setting paralleling our own. Because of this, the game operates on forced humanization for any non-human characters. Additionally, power loss will be at play for characters AU'd into the setting, but you are free to have them use their canon powers and abilities as their Dreamer skillset.
Thematically, Beautiful Dreamer is a game built to encourage long-term character arcs in relation to things like self identity and hopes for the future, with players having the freedom to take this in both positive and negative directions. And of course, we're all here for anime shenanigans.

RULES & MISC.
!Expected Player Conduct
Rule Zero of Beautiful Dreamer is basically just a lot of things boiled down into one simple phrase: Don't Be An Asshole. While we understand that not all players will always be best friends with each other, we do expect a base level of civility from and for everyone in the game. Treat your fellow players and mods with the same level of courtesy and respect you'd like to receive in return and in instances where you would prefer not to interact with another player, please utilize their opt outs and alert the mods if this becomes a larger issue.
In terms of RP, players are expected to keep basic rules of etiquette in mind and refrain from godmodding, infomodding, blurring IC/OOC boundaries and otherwise avoid making other people's time in the game unpleasant. Act in good faith and make an effort to stay engaged and active, particularly if you intend to play a character who becomes involved in the metaplot.
If we find players to be contributing to an unsafe or unpleasant atmosphere in the game, we may issue a warning. In extreme cases of bad behaviour, the mod team reserves the right to act in the interests of the playerbase and issue an outright ban without prior warning.
Players are encouraged to try and resolve small-scale disagreements between themselves, but please don't hesitate to come to the mods if you find yourself in a situation you need some intervention in. We're always here to help!

!Expected Content & Warnings
Based as it is on classical magical girl tropes, Beautiful Dreamer is intended to be a relatively light-hearted and affirming story. While it borrows elements and inspiration from entries into the genre known to swing grimdark, BD itself is not intended to be a "dark" magical girl story nor do we want or intend for the game to consistently stray into disturbing, upsetting or NSFW territory. If you need a quick comparison for shorthand's sake, the game is intended to be more on the Princess Tutu or Sleepless Domain side of things than the Madoka Magica or Magical Girl Site side.
Due to the nature of the premise and the setting mechanics, players should expect to encounter prominent themes of anxiety, depression and despair and instances of trauma and abuse discussed and referred to but not depicted directly. However, the intent is for characters to face and overcome these issues and come out stronger on the other side and not just to throw rocks at them for the sake of it.
Players should also be on the lookout for mild to moderate violence and body horror, unreality and mild existential horror and partial to total loss of memory and identity. Individual player plots focused on exploring a character's headspace may also dip into disturbing imagery & horror-adjacent content depending on the player and character in question. Logs and events will come with additional content warnings where appropriate and players will never be forced to take part in aspects of the game they might be uncomfortable with.
In addition, the nature of a panfandom game, as well as a game focused on characters overcoming personal struggles, means that potentially disturbing/upsetting material outside of the above will be introduced to the game on occasion. The mod team does not plan to excessively restrict what can be played out or discussed in game, but we do ask that players refrain from coming up with AU backstories that are overly dark or excessively traumatic for characters – as mentioned above, Beautiful Dreamer is ultimately intended to be a relatively light-hearted game above all else. We also expect players to warn for instances of upsetting or disturbing material when it comes up in threads and provide avenues for other players to opt out of interacting with this subject matter.
If you run into any problems in this regard, don’t hesitate to let the mods know.

!Timezones & Availability
Beautiful Dreamer's headmod, unfortunately, lives in England and thus all times and dates for the game are run on UK time. Depending on the time of year, this will be either GMT or BST (GMT+1). For players outside the UK, you can use websites like Timezone Converter to doublecheck when the listed times fall in your timezones.
My overall availability is all over the place because of a slightly erratic work schedule but I am generally available on and off through the week and all day through weekends (barring other commitments.)

APPS & SUITABILITY
?Who can I app to Beautiful Dreamer?
Beautiful Dreamer accepts characters from all types of canons and mediums. In addition, while the game is based on the magical girl genre, characters of all ages and genders can be apped as Dreamers. Give Us Your Best Oyaji Mahous.
At base, players can have up to four characters in the game at any time – two Dreamers and two mundane/unpowered characters. Additional character slots can be optionally purchased via AC rewards.
We have a soft age cap of thirteen, but any characters below that are welcome to the game so long as you can make a good case for them in the suitability section of your app.
As mentioned above, characters who are nonhuman must be humanized. You do not need to find a PB or fill out a full roster of AU icons, but you are expected to provide some sort of visual reference for your character's AU appearance.
Characters who require large amounts of headcanon to be playable may be apped but will be judged on a case by case basis. Fictionalized versions of real people will also be judged on a case by case basis – as a rule of thumb, something like Fate or Eternal Sonata is fine but something like a VTuber or The Nostalgia Critic is not.
Original characters and PCs from tabletop campaigns are allowed and are grouped under the same heading. Players can also – and are highly encouraged to! – create setting native OCs to app into Beautiful Dreamer.

?Who CAN'T I app to Beautiful Dreamer?
At this time, Beautiful Dreamer does not accept:
We also ask that characters keep overall suitability and appropriateness for the setting and tone of the game in mind when considering potential characters. Everybody loves a good grouch or a reluctant hero, but characters who are completely uninterested in taking part in the magical warrior aspects of the game or participating in the metaplot would be a poor fit for the game overall. In addition, characters who are overly abrasive and hellbent on mayhem with no ability to function day-to-day in the game setting will likely be subject to revision requests.
Finally, characters intent on bigotry, racism, homophobia, transphobia, misgendendering of trans/nonbinary characters in-game or other such instances of yikes behaviour will not be accepted to Beautiful Dreamer.

⧖ Fandom OCs

⧖ Characters without a mostly human level of sapience and/or ability to communicate
⧖ Characters from canons that are exclusively sexual/pornographic
⧖ Characters from canons that lack an English translation (official or otherwise)

?I want to play a supernatural creature/robot/weird edge case not covered here! Can I do that?
Unfortunately, we don't currently allow characters to come into game as anything but a regular squishy human! However, we do also love weird edge cases and if you've come up with one of them that falls in line with the Beautiful Dreamer lore and setting info, feel free to pitch it to me! Worst case scenario, you just have to workshop it a little more. Generally though, if you have an idea that you're not totally sure about you can just give me a yell and we'll discuss it!
?What's the app process?
Beautiful Dreamer's app process is pretty simple!
The AU workshop opens the 10th of each month and prospective players are encouraged to use it to plot out their AU and plan out potential CR. Apps will be open for the final week of every month and are screened to allow you to keep any sneaky secrets you have under your hat. When applying, just head over to the application page, fill out the appropriate form and post your application in the comments. If your app is too long for a single comment, feel free to split it across as many as you need.
Apps are processed on a rolling basis as the week goes by until midnight of the final day of the month, at which point apps close. When processed, your app will receive one of the following responses:
BD does not have IC intro logs, so there's no need to wait for one - characters can begin posting as soon as they're accepted and have done all their intro housekeeping!

- Accepted: Success! Your acceptance form will have some housekeeping for you to do but once that's done, you're free to start playing in the game.
Revision Request: Revision requests just mean there's something about your app that needs fixing before it can be accepted. Your revision request will outline what needs to be fixed and what the timeline is for revision submissions. Get them submitted and you should be good to go!
Rejection: Rejections go out in the rare instance of a character or player not being suitable for the game, or because there are too many issues with your application for a revision request. In the interest of discretion and player privacy, we do not publicly disclose the reasons an app is a rejected but players are free to PM us for a fuller explanation of our judgement. Unless directly stated, a rejection does not equal a ban from the game and you are free to submit a fresh app during the next app round.

?How do I drop from the game? Can I re-app if I do?
We don't have a formal drop page, but if you plan to leave Beautiful Dreamer, just pop a DM to your gorgeous and humble headmod (Claire) and let them know. You can hash out the specifics of what happens to your character and you have a few choices for what happens to them.
Drop: No muss, no fuss, just a straightforward drop. Your character will still exist in the game setting but you will no longer be playing them. You are free to establish an explanation for this or just handwave it and not think about it too hard.
Retirement: Your character loses their powers as a Dreamer and is demoted to a secondary character slot. This allows you to continue playing them in the setting but you will no longer be able to take part in the Dreamer half of the game. Retirement is permanent and even if you drop and re-app your character, they will not regain their powers. If you would like to play a retired character as a Dreamer again, you will need to app them fresh with a brand new AU backstory.
If you’re dropped from the game and are now looking to app back, that’s easy too! Comment to the app page while apps are open with a link to your previous app and some notes on how you would like your character to re-enter the game and once you get a mod response, you're good to go!

PACE & ACTIVITY
?What's the expected schedule and pace of Beautiful Dreamer?
Beautiful Dreamer's apps and activity periods are on a monthly schedule with mod-run events spaced out roughly every four to six weeks, though these may be pushed forwards or backwards depending on what best suits the playerbase and the overall game pacing.
I can't make any promises about the game's eventual pace, but similar games I have run in the past have been slow to medium paced, moving up to medium to fast during events.

?How does activity check work in Beautiful Dreamer?
Beautiful Dreamer runs on a bimonthly AC system, meaning that players are required to provide two threads with separate characters totalling ten comments overall per two-month period to pass activity check.
Players are required to submit AC on the Permanent Activity Check page and may submit their AC any time during an activity period.
AC is processed on the first day of a new AC period. Once AC is processed, the results are posted with the corresponding Monthly Post and any characters who have failed to meet the activity minimum will be issued a strike.
A strike can be cleared by passing AC the next period with sufficient activity. Failing to pass AC for checks in a row without some manner of discussion with the mods will result in a character being swept from the game.
While BD's AC is relatively relaxed and the mods are open to accommodate players who are struggling due to real life or circumstances otherwise out of their control, if a player is found to be consistently taking strikes and scraping by on minimum AC, the mod team reserves the right to discuss the state of their activity with said player and, in extreme cases, remove them from the game.

?What happens if I can't make AC?
As mentioned above, characters who do not meet the AC minimum will be issued a strike. This can easily be cleared the next round, so long as you are sure to tag around. If you fail to clear your strike before the next activity check, your character will be swept from the game.
If there are extenuating circumstances around you not being able to make AC then please speak to the mods and we will do our best to work with you!

?I need a break! How do I go on hiatus?
If you need to go on hiatus, simply contact the mods and let them know that you need a break from the game. Provide an estimate on how long you will be away and when you expect to return and you will be given a pass on your activity until your hiatus expires. While on hiatus you are, of course, free to keep playing your character and tag around in BD – if you are totally stepping back from the game for your hiatus period, it will be assumed your character is on autopilot unless other plans are made.
We do not have a max limit on hiatus length currently, but ask that players who expect to be absent from the game for 3+ months with no estimated return date consider dropping and reapping when they are in a better position to play.

query about characters w like. another character attached basically
With the nature of Novvy's character concept I'm gonna have to do a lot of writing flexibly around his kid, Gratia, and I was thinking about ways to handle that! Initially my idea was 'handwaving and writing her into the fringes of scenes,' but the course of rp flows as it will and I noticed I was doing a lot of writing little bits of other ppl interacting with her in my TDM threads.
Now I've been thinking it might be more appropriate for me to formally app Gratia into the game with one of my mundane character slots? I wasn't planning on using all my slots, anyway, and I'm not gonna switch around journals for every little thing w her because that would he ridiculous-- but I could maintain a separate journal for her for scenes isolated from Novvy and endeavor to make AC for her with it. I'm definitely not looking to run around rping with myself, but I also don't want to run around puppetting two distinct people in a scene without saying something.
How would you prefer for this to be handled?
no subject
In future, I'll reserve the right to judge this sort of thing on a case by case basis and may have to make different calls depending on how people are playing it, but in this specific instance the way you're handling things is fine. That said, I do appreciate the heads up and I will probably ask in future that folks make mention of this sort of thing on their apps.

Is it possible for Dreamers to completely change their appearance while in the Dream Sphere (ie: "this is how they want to be perceived as", etc)? I don't mind gijinka-ing either way but I thought it might be kind of neat.

More specifically, would it be kosher to app Alice (she/her in Fake Canon Name) into the game already identifying as they/them nonbinary, or app her in as a trans girl? Or to app in Bob (he/him in Another Canon Example) and have the character undergo the realization over the course of play that she really is a magical girl, or nonbinary? Or would you rather keep that sort of thing to canonically trans characters?

More seriously, Yumemigaoka was absolutely written to be a setting that would be as friendly to LGBTQA+ characters in general so if that results in people playing that sort of thing out, I think that would be neat! Another player has already asked this in private and been given the okay so I will say it publicly for other players to see: absolutely you could do this if you wanted!
(I mean, I would absolutely be a hypocrite if I said no considering I went and did Exactly That with one of the BD NPCs...........)

spoilers for gachiakuta in the comment, sorry!
The character I'm thinking of playing is Riyo from Gachiakuta. However, since the series is still reasonably new (with around 60 chapters out currently), we still don't have all the information on her backstory. We did recently learn (warning for spoilers here!) that she used to be an assassin who is now trying not to kill, (end spoilers) but I wasn't sure if she counted as a "headcanon-heavy" character and therefore was unsure if she'd be appable or not. She has a fully established personality, it's just the details of her backstory that are missing, though there's enough to infer quite a few details about her life at least. Of course, since I'd be creating an AU backstory for her, I wasn't sure if that made a difference??
I'm also not too sure what counts as "too dark" for an AU backstory. Since Riyo used to kill people in canon, I was hoping to carry that over or something similar to her backstory here as well, but I'd want to check first if that's too much for this particular game. If so, I'd be more than happy to make adjustments as needed, but I thought I'd check first!
My last question (sorry) is about the AU nature of the game - I haven't written in a AU game before so I'm slightly unfamiliar with how they work. I saw on the FAQ page that the game doesn't accept player-created AUs, but I don't really understand how that works in an AU game?? I might be misunderstanding something simple, so I apologize in advance for that!
Thank you so much! If Riyo isn't appable, I completely understand, I just thought it was at least worth asking. I'm happy to answer any questions or give more details if needed!
Spoilers continued
1) That's more than enough for BD! So long as you have enough of a read on their personality to play it consistently in RP and build an AU around it, that's totally fine. We have a few folks playing from ongoing works in game so you'll be in good company!
2) We don't necessarily have a Hard And Fast Rule for this sort of thing, just to allow ourselves some flexibility but based on your comment here, while having assassination or murder in her backstory would not fit in with BD tonally, something like her being a reformed former delinquent might be a good fit! I'm not familiar enough with Gachiakuta to suggest something more specific but hopefully that example should be good as a general ballpark to aim for.
3) No worries at all! Basically, because we do not accept duplicate characters and our overall franchise cap is relatively low, BD does not accept characters from pre-existing player-made AUs that are unconnected to the game - CRAUs, roleswaps, that sort of thing. I hope that clears things up!

Kero-chan! I see you said Link could get a companion so??? I'm assuming he would initially come in like. Plush form. And later she can upgrade him or something maybe to True Form?? idk just. Wanting to check on that. I know some places say he is appable so I couldn't bring him in alongside her and others said it was fine to bring him since that chance is so so slim.
Also for her powers?? I was debating something like. Say, she would start with specific Clow cards (since lol prob not. Gonna get All The Points/or for that matter all the power slots to get Every Single Card) and eventually upgrade them to Sakura Cards and then Clear Cards as she gets more experience sort of thing?? Would that work?? Assuming I choose cards that have Clear Card equivalents sort of thing I mean? I'm still waffling on this and debating things but. I hope that might work or you have suggestions if I'm not quite there yet?? If I do go with Sakura and not a different character, still deciding.
no subject
1) You could absolutely regain Kero! I think the chance of someone apping him is slim enough that, combined with how different their AU would make him from Sakura's companion Kero, I don't think it would be a problem.
2) Basing her powers on the Clow cards would be totally fine! We could chat about the specifics more later down the line if you settle on Sakura but using the Clow cards as the basis/motif for her powers and upgrading them to new cards would absolutely work.
Hopefully this was helpful! Let us know if there's anything else you need answering.

My character's family is important to him in his canon, and his brother in particular might qualify as appable, though he is neither popular nor, in my opinion, well-suited to the game, so I don't actually anticipate this coming up.
I want to include an equivalent to his family in the AU. Is it ok to write them as they were, names and identifying details and all — in the process cooking up my own AU for them as well, possibly making one or more of them former Dreamers themselves? Or should I fudge details, for example: in this AU he was influenced not by his canon brother but by an OC cousin / sister / etc?

Hope that helps!

The problem is that I need Frieren to start with two specific powers that are heavily intertwined with her backstory. One is an ability that Frieren canonically has prior to becoming her mentor's apprentice, and that I'm having her learn early on in the AU; I can't imagine Frieren taking 16 years (the amount of time she's been a Dreamer) to acquire it. The other is her mentor's signature ability; since her mentor has passed away, she has to know it by the time she joins the game. Not only that, she has a power she forgot due to a Nightmare attack, so it can't be picked as a starter as it would contradict her established lore.
Frieren learning spells is something that is integral to her character both in her canon and in her AU, and so I was looking forward to playing with this. It would be difficult for me to adjust the backstory because it's pretty much locked down at this point, and I feel it would weaken it if I had to. Would it be acceptable to request a special exception and choose her starting powers in this case? I would still list 4+ powers, of course.

so, PCs from tabletop campaigns are allowed, but out-and-out fandom OCs are not -- what about malleable protagonists, like the player characters from baldur's gate 3, the fallout games, ffxiv, cyberpunk 2077, etc.?
i know they kind of ride a funny line as sorta canon sanctioned fandom OCs, with varying degrees of customizability depending on the game, so i always like to check to see where they fall on modly scales

Hey there, I was wondering if people could do/have done something with like...the idea of a character who was an active Dreamer when they were younger, took a break, and are now returning? Would that qualify as a retirement, or would the Dreamer still be able to access powers?
no subject
Anyway that's totally fine! Retirement is just a way to like, depower your character and continue playing them in the BD setting if you like - a character having previously stepped back who is now returning would still have their powers!

1. Could a character potentially have gone through a version of the events he was involved in in canon? Radley's arc was the least sci-fi of the entire series, being more of a modern Western, and would probably adapt fairly well to a regular world backstory.
2. I just finished writing a long story drawing on Sailor Moon elements where he learns he is a reborn Spanish prince who is similar to Sailor Moon in some ways. Would this backstory be appropriate for awakening as a Dreamer or would I need to come up with something else for him?
3. Could he perhaps have been in the City before, awakened as a Dreamer, left to experience some form of canon events, and then come back to the City so RPing him opens with him already aware of being a Dreamer and having some powers?
4. I also like to play around with having Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon co-exist in the same verse. Would it be acceptable for him to come in with an Eevee as a companion animal, at least if Eevees in this world don't have Pokemon powers?
Thank you!

1. You're free to use canon events as a basis for your AU backstory, so long as they can be translated to match BD's setting and tone!
2. Admittedly I'm a little confused as to the question here, so forgive me if this answer isn't super helpful! BD does not have 'reincarnation' mechanics or supernatural elements of that nature — there are aspects of the setting lore that achieve a similar effect but aren't quite the same thing. As such, this would not be a suitable Awakening. The Dreamer FAQ has a more thorough outline of Awakening methods that you could use though, so definitely check that out!
3. That would be fine! The option to app characters as Experienced Dreamers exists to allow for this sort of thing.
4. As mentioned in the FAQ, we do not allow for players to app from pre-existing AUs unrelated to BD. This includes crossover AUs. In addition, BD does not have any supernatural/fantasy elements as part of its modern day world. You would be free to establish him as having pets in game, but these would be regular real world animals.
