Powers & Upgrades

BASE ABILITIES

    Part and parcel of becoming a Dreamer is awakening to several new kinds of powers and abilities as manifestations of a Dreamer's individual magic. These abilities can be used in battle to combat opponents or they can be used to interact with the setting in various ways. At base, all Dreamers apping into the game, regardless of skill level, will share the following abilities:

      Weapon Summon: While in the Dream Sphere, a Dreamer's Sandglass will transform and become their weapon, able to be summoned out of thin air at will. This signature weapon will appear to be made of glass and be filled with the sand that can be seen inside a Dreamer's Sandglass. Note that ‘weapon’ here is being used loosely and that you’re also free to have characters summon tools or toys or things that you wouldn’t usually consider to be a weapon. A character’s signature weapon can also change in appearance depending on both power and character development, but this is largely an aesthetic change only (unless you specifically have a power that will alter your weapon).

      Enhanced Strength and Durability: In comparison to their human selves, Dreamers hit harder and are able to take blows from enemies that would be extremely dangerous for a regular human. This aspect of their powerset is largely a meta conceit to put all characters on the same level, but it can be played with as you like. Before any additional powers, a Dreamer's strength should be capped at what would be reasonable for an unaugmented human being to pull off (i.e, they could be as strong as a bodybuilder but not a robot).

      Enhanced Movement Capabilities: In order to help them get around the Dream Sphere, Dreamers will find they have become overall more agile. They can run much faster and have much greater stamina to do so and perhaps most excitingly, they can now bunnyhop around like a demented platformer mascot. They can't quite fly with this ability, but they could probably jump up to a second floor window without any problems.


    On top of the above, Dreamers will also have a number of unique abilities that make up their individual powersets. These unique abilities are ranked on a letter scale ascending from E: E, D, C, B, and A. S and EX also exist as ‘endgame’ states representing total mastery of power but will require more than just points to unlock...

    A Dreamer's magic becomes more impactful the higher its rank is: while Fire Mastery E might create a torch-sized flame, Fire Mastery A could light a bonfire the size of a house. If in doubt, go with your instinct for what is reasonable or ask a mod if you're unsure.

    Powers can be more or less anything! They can range from things that have raw combat utility or they can be more general – or even a bit silly! You can also have your character develop powers that function in a more passive sense and enhance their innate abilities over something more flashy. Your Dreamer's powers should serve as an expression of their personality and overall vibe, so feel free to have fun with it.

    For playability & lore reasons, we do have a handful of powers that are restricted or blanket banned:

      ⧖ Time travel (limited time control powers are fine)
      ⧖ Long-range teleportation (short-range blinking/flash stepping is fine)
      ⧖ Powers directly related to control over life and death (Necromancy, etc)
      ⧖ Dream walking/dream manipulation/etc
      (I THINK THIS ONE SPEAKS FOR ITSELF)

POWER PROGRESSION



    When apping into the game, characters will list a minimum of four unique powers on their app that they'd like to start with. Dreamers starting out as Novices will receive one of these powers at D-Rank while Experienced Dreamers apping into the game will receive two at D-Rank. Following this, characters can receive new unique powers via AC rewards - see the Bonus Threads page for more information on how to collect these.

    Newly purchased powers will start at E Rank and cost four points. Once a Dreamer ranks up and becomes Experienced, you may choose to spend an extra two points (totaling six) to start a new power at D Rank instead.

    You can also use points to upgrade a power, raising its ranking by one step. In turn, this will increase the effectiveness of your characters' power and their overall control of it. Upgrades can cover:

      ⧖ Improvements to a power's range, magnitude, or quantity. (Examples: extending effective range of hydrokinesis or total amount of water that can be manipulated, increasing number of manipulable objects/familiars that can be summoned at once.)
      ⧖ Improvements to a power's precision. (Examples: pyrokinesis capable of being used simply to generate heat and not actual flames.)
      ⧖ Extensions of a power's applications or execution. (Examples: modifying a basic electrical shock power into an ability to create electric force fields.)
      ⧖ Expansions on a theme. (Examples: character with rain-related powers gaining snow-related versions of those powers.)
      ⧖ Basically, anything that can be justified as an "upgrade" of an existing power.

    Upgrades will cost two points and raise the associated ability's rank by one step.

    In short, players are encouraged to establish a thematic 'base' powerset for their character and to build their abilities from there with upgrades and new powers as they see fit. For Novice Dreamers, their powers cap at B Rank, while Experienced Dreamers can go as far as A Rank. Once a character has three or more powers at A Rank, they can select one to ascend to S Rank.




SIGNATURE ABILITIES



    Signature Abilities are a character's biggest, flashiest attacks in the vein of a Limit Break or a Noble Phantasm. They are high-power, once-per-battle attacks that Dreamers can use to dish out massive amounts of damage and to permanently purify Nightmares. Essentially, these are your big once-an-episode stock footage attacks. If you were playing Sailor Moon or Mew Ichigo, this would be your Moon Tiara Action or Ribbon Strawberry Check.

    Signature Abilities can not be used by Novice Dreamers – once a Dreamer selects their Combat Archetype, they will automatically be granted a Signature Ability. Simply submit a power request as you would for any other new ability, but go into some detail about your Signature Ability's look and feel as well as its particular use and effects. A Signature Ability should also have a name that your character can dramatically call out when making use of it. There are no limitations on what you can call it, other that it should contain the word Dream in some way or form.

    Power-wise, Signature Abilities come with a few limitations. As well as the above restrictions on all powers, there are some drawbacks that come with use of a Signature Ability:

      ⧖ Like other powers, Signature Abilities are ranked. Their maximum possible rank is whatever your current highest ranked power is – if all your powers are Rank B, then your Signature Ability is capped at Rank B too.
      ⧖ Signature Abilities are one use only per battle. Once used, the Dreamer can continue to contribute to the battle but after three turns pass or the battle ends (whichever comes first) they will be returned to the real world and thus ejected from battle.

    Make sure to use your Signature Ability wisely!





TANDEM POWERS



    Tandem Powers are a branch of power upgrades available to Experienced Dreamers that allow them to combine their magic with their allies to explosive results! Tandem Powers are a synthesis of the two Dreamers' magic and imagination and as such, they are considered to be a representation of the relationship between two Dreamers as well as an extension of their magic. Powers blending to the degree that births a Tandem Power generally comes from some level of intensity between two Dreamers... good or bad.

    Mechanically speaking, Tandem Powers are combo moves that can be used in battle and regular play just the same as any other power. Tandem Powers are overall stronger than solo magic, but they come with a few caveats: they are typically more specific and situational, can only be used when both Dreamers are working together and have the potential to change or even become nonfunctional if the relationship changes.

    To purchase a Tandem Power, either player may fill out the appropriate form and submit it, with each player paying half of the total cost of purchase. Upgrading functions the same, with a note that Tandem Powers are capped in accordance with the weaker character in the duo; for example, if one character's highest power Rank is A and the other's highest is C, their Tandem Power will be capped at C until the second character gets a bit stronger.

    New Tandem Powers cost ten points overall (5 points per player). Upgrades will cost six points (three per player) and raise the associated ability's rank by one step. Due to their nature, Tandem Powers automatically start at Rank C and are hard capped at S Rank. Both characters must have at least one C Rank Power to purchase a Tandem Power.





FINAL NOTES



    As mentioned on the Dreamer FAQ, players can choose to app their characters into the game as either a Novice Dreamer or an Experienced Dreamer. This is mostly to allow OOC flexibility for people who are more interested in jumping directly into playing around in the setting or to give players who already have a character in the game a leg-up in getting their new characters caught up on things. There are also a few differences from an IC perspective, though not too many – Experienced Dreamers will have a few unique opportunities within the Dreamer Union, such as becoming Mentors to less worldweary Dreamers and going on Torment Hunts with higher Risk levels.

Power Name: Sealing Barrier
Rank: E
Description and Effect: Nene conjures a glowing barrier—or rather, a repelling force—around herself with a single, large enough that it can encapsulate herself and one other person if they remain immediately next to her. (It's possible to fit two others in, but that would require both to really squeeze in on either side of Nene, and they'd have to be around the same size as her).

The barrier repels anything that Nene wants to get away from, while allowing in anything she deems safe and doesn't mind having nearby. This operates based on her subconscious, however, so while the criteria can change based on the situation and isn't necessarily detrimental as it operates on Nene's subconscious instincts and feelings, it does mean that Nene isn't exactly in full control of it.

Additionally, it also comes with an electrifying shock to anything that comes in direct contact with it, but at Rank E it isn't enough to deal actual damage. It's more like touching someone who just stored up a bunch of static electricity and touched you with it. It stings enough that one might immediately recoil if it catches them by surprise, but that's all.

Nene can conjure the barrier willingly with some effort, but she struggles to maintain it in normal circumstances. While in immediate danger or in a stressful environment, however, it becomes more powerful and easier to use. It serves as an effective panic button that will repel most threats and keep her safe. That said, it's not perfect. An assailant can push past if they're strong and/or stubborn enough, and it's weak to concentrated attacks on a single point.

Description and Effect: Sylvain can summon flame to the palm of his hand. This can be used as a minor light source or heat source, and can also be thrown as a fire spell at enemies to cause some scalding damage.

Upgraded Effect: The boost in power gained from singing increases, and now extends to anyone who harmonizes and sings with her, albeit to a slightly lesser effect. Additionally, while Hibiki is singing (and only while she’s singing), her gauntlets gain the ability to change shape to either have more powerful boosters, or to have a drill around Hibiki’s fist.

Description and Effects: Basically this. Coating his weapon and himself in black and green energy, he draws the image of a blood moon before delivering a spinning crescent slash at the Nightmare. At this rank, his weapon is required to use and focus the attack. As the rank increases, he'll be able to bypass the weapon requirement and use it as a kick too.

Power Name: Mode Change: Bujin
Previous & New Rank: B → A
Upgraded Effect: Ninja Dueller achieves a new form, simply called Bujin (武刃 though an alternate reading makes it sound like Martial God instead of Martial Blade...). From its peculiar shape, it takes on a more traditional form of a katana with a saya. It provides a significant boost to Tycoon's attack but locks him into using only Bujin; at this point in time, he cannot change it back into Ninja Dueller and cannot un-summon his weapon. Waking up and re-entering the Dream sphere resets this. There is a thematic reason for this. Trust

Previous & New Rank: E -> D
Upgraded Effect: Output control! Rhodonite can turn down the power of her bolts to do less damage and consume less magic (good for training!) or up for additional damage and slightly better firing speed. Yes, it goes to 11.

Power Name: Distortion
Previous & New Rank: D -> C
Upgraded Effect: Can function as more traditional barrier magic, instead of something Rhodonite always needs to actively play to support. After feeding magic into her song for a bit, the shield takes shape as she desires and can be set up to stay in that form and position until broken or dispelled. A shield set in this way bears pulsing music notes that glide around its outside ring, rather than the harsher, pulsing ends of her current shields, and faintly glows in her magic's usual red color. At this Rank, Rhodonite can set up to one shield without active focus, and can play to maintain a second as normal. Alternately, she can keep pouring all that magic into a single shield while she's focused on it as she does normally, giving her a stronger, thicker shield. Distortion has a maximum total output, so two shields are not actually stronger than one actively maintained shield.

Power Name: Harmony
Previous & New Rank: E -> D
Upgraded Effect: Rhodonite's Powers that need her to play music to work, instead function off whatever performance is triggering Harmony, even Powers that otherwise need her bass in hand. Backup dancing, singing, poetry recitation, it's all good, as long as she's part of the show. Does not apply to her Signature Ability at this Rank. If she stops performing, her Powers stop working until she starts playing again. If another character comes into possession of her Powers somehow, this effect originating from Rhodonite applies to that character too.

Power Name: Reflecting Mirrors
Rank: E
Description and Effect: Junna can now make a magical stage mirror appear, which she and other Dreamers can bounce energy attacks off of. This makes them harder to dodge, since they ricochet. At Rank E, she can make one mirror at a time and the mirror vanishes after two shots are reflected off it.

Power Name: Energy Arrow
Previous & New Rank: D -> C
Upgraded Effect: Junna can now invest two actions into one charged up energy arrow; doing so will do a lot more damage, though it will make her rather vulnerable (given she has to stay in place). Mega Man intensifies. >:)

Power Name: Plant Control
Previous & New Rank: C -> B
Upgraded Effect: Junna's plants and vines can now entangle and bind large creatures, like larger Nightmares. She can't do that to truly titanic creatures.

Description and Effect: The Dreamer gains resistance to impairing conditions. For a limited impairment, the duration decreases to [90/75/50/25/10]% of normal, while for ongoing conditions the effect is only [90/75/50/25/10]% effective.

Description and Effect: Combining Power Driver and Weapon Driver, the Dreamer summons a unique weapon based on the target of Power Driver, which enables new attacks as well as increasing all the damage done by the Dreamer to [100/125/150/175/200]% of normal.

Description and Effect: General movement passives! At Rank E, the powers sort of mild and not particularly noticeable. Things like; standing on water (up to 30cm/1ft deep, any deeper and he falls in), slowing down the speed at which he slides down walls, silent landing, etc. All of these are passive and, at this rank, have no impact on combat.

Upgraded Effect: Range goes up to 15 metres.

Upgraded Effect: He can now make up to 5 bunshins with 1/2 of his health/stats or condense them to make 1 bunshin with his full health/stats/abilities. One of these days, he'll learn to transform his bunshin into useful items like Ango does... Maybe.

Upgraded Effect: The quality is pretty good now! when If he tries to transform into another Dreamer, unlike a certain other Ninja, it is purely as a character model switch; Tycoon does not copy their abilities. Tanuki mode can now be actively switched into! Embrace the tanuki, be the tanuki...

Upgraded Effect: The power boost increases further, making Hibiki far more physically powerful than the average Dreamer so long as she's singing, but in the event that she stops singing, the power boost now slowly fades rather than abruptly stopping, giving her some leeway to still use the boost in the event her song is forcibly interrupted.

While singing, her scarf becomes a weapon as well, able to be used almost like a whip as indicated when it starts to glow, at which point it can briefly grow in length as needed to a certain extent. This, like her gauntlets' different forms, become unavailable if she isn't singing, further emphasizing that she's considerably less capable if she can't sing.

Description and Effect: An offensive attack that causes Ruby's whip to spark when she cracks it, slightly increasing the damage she's capable of doing. At E, this extra damage can only go up to a quarter of the original damage output and doesn't add any elemental damage.

Upgraded Effect: At Rank C, the size of the flare Ruby creates gets slightly larger. The chance of her lowering the accuracy of her chosen target increases, and she also has a small chance of lowering the accuracy of enemies standing next to the target.

Description and Effect: Conjures a pink metallic sphere in an open hand, which will explode in an equally pink dome shaped explosion a few moments after its thrown or dropped. At E rank, the explosion is not very large, but it has room to grow into a big boy one day.

Upgraded Effect: Nene's fish form remains the only form she has access to, but her fish form is resistant to harmful effects in any liquid substance that she swims in. (Think like how Magikarp are canonically able to survive in any body of water regardless of whether it's freshwater, saltwater, or dirty water). She still has no way of defending herself while as a fish, though.

Description and Effects: Junna fires one energy arrow, which explodes into 12 different energy arrows. These can either strike one target or be spread across multiple targets. Each energy arrow explodes into bright golden stars.

Power Name: Plant Control
Previous & New Rank: B -> A
Upgraded Effect: Sage can cause a large area to be filled with vines, which will greatly slow the movement of larger creatures and completely stop smaller ones.

Power Name: Energy Arrow, now known as Elemental Energy Arrows
Previous & New Rank: C -> B
Upgraded Effect: After charging an arrow for one action, Sage can make the arrow into a fire, ice, or thunder arrow. (She has played JPRG's and knows about elemental weaknesses.)

Power Name: Reflecting Mirrors
Previous & New Rank: E -> D
Upgraded Effect: Sage can now make two mirrors appear with one action. Each can have an energy shot reflected off them twice before collapsing.

New Power Name: Starlight Heal
Rank: D (since she'll be an Experienced Dreamer)
Description and Effect: Sage can heal herself or an ally's wounds with a burst of starlight. It is only minor healing and can only target one person.

Power Name: Prisma Shot
Previous & New Rank: D -> C
Upgraded Effect: The round balls of energy she shoots from her staff only flew in a straight line after being aimed at D rank. Now those balls of energy will actually follow a target around until they hit it, kind of like heat-seeking missiles. So it's basically improved accuracy.

New power
Power Name: Prism Summon: Berserker
Rank: E
Description and Effect: The star on Prisma's wand starts glowing, and one of the star's point's especially lights up to summon forth a being that's sustained by Prisma's power as a Dreamer. This being is Berserker. At E-rank he is tiny. Comes-up-to-Prisma's-waist tiny, and she is not a tall girl in the slightest. Which means it's practically a very aggressive garden gnome with a big (well, you know, big proportional to the garden gnome size) sword. It will aggressively attack the most nearby enemy, and doesn't seem to be capable of listening to commands that tell it to do anything else.

Remaining Points: 6 - 6 (4 for new power, 2 for upgrade) = 0

(+2 in boss combat) Their surveillance abilities are more detailed in description now (although some details still slip through the cracks), along with more clearer visuals! They're now about on par with a 1080p HD video, but they're still a step away from Super High Res

Upgraded Effect: Can float about three feet off the ground now! Let the boy get some more air-time now that he's growing a lil bit 8'|

Upgraded Effect: Hanako and the possessed Dreamer still operate in tandem, and now they also have access to all powers between the parties at 1 rank below normal (with the minimum being D if the power is at that rank)

Power Name: Transparency

Upgraded Effect: Can turn himself invisible for a minute (or one tag, in combat-based threads), although not untouchable or undetectable (and cannot be used in conjunction with his Intangibility) Can now extend the power to others as long as he's touching them, but the effect wears off about halfway through the duration of his invisibility.

Power Name: Intangibility
Previous & New Rank: B -> A
Upgraded Effect: He can now fine tune the ability to just his hands, and can extend the ability to another Dreamer for four minutes (or four turns if in system-based battle), provided he is holding onto them before activation.

Power Name: Bound Dream: Purgatory Knife
Previous & New Rank: D -> C
Upgraded Effect: The binding ropes can now hold the enemy in place for two turns in combat, and the offense/defense buff has increased slightly (by .5).

Power Name: Supernatural ☆ Kiss
Rank: E
Description and Effect: With a wink and a blown kiss, Hanako sends over a red heart that can either buff a fellow Dreamer's defenses by a slight amount or inflict minor damage on an enemy (.5 at E rank). Is this basically an offense/defense dupe of Ai's power? Yup. Is it going to be awful for everyone involved? Absolutely!!!

Description and Effect: Dreamer Echo's (née Dreamer Ghost) song reaches a crescendo, the emotions contained within the music swelling and bursting out in the form of musical notation that swirls into wings of light that illuminate her, which fires a laser from each wing before disappearing. Description and Effect: A leftover power from when Hibiki's Night Terror took her over inside her Disturbance. Hibiki presses a switch in her Hourglass and declares "Ignite!!" which causes it's appearance to change into something darker and more sinister looking, black and spiked with bright red sand inside. A spike of energy then juts out from the Hourglass, to which it will either fly up and come down to pierce Hibiki's chest. This will result in her channeling and accepting her negative feelings and emotions as part of her, transforming her into Ignite Mode.

(Failure to successfully accept the negative aspects of herself will cause the transformation to fail. It will look for a moment like she will go into her Berserk State from her Disturbance, but only for a brief moment before dissipating and leaving her stunned.)

In this state, all of Hibiki's abilities increase exponentially, but only for a short period of time (in boss combat, +1 to durability and mobility, and the timer is based on rank). When the timer runs out, Ignite Mode will be forcibly deactivated and will leave Hibiki briefly stunned and unable to move (in boss combat, stunned for one turn). Finally, Hibiki's Earth Manipulation is changed into Fire Manipulation for as long as Ignite Mode is active. The strength of the buffs/how long she can remain Ignited depends on the ability rank. At E-rank, Ignite only lasts for two turns.

Description and Effect: Free flight! Hibiki has gained the ability to sprout brightly glowing, large angelic wings from her back. When she does so, the tips of her hair glow like flames, and she gains the ability to fry freely through the air. At Rank E, however, the wings have a time limit of five minutes that only resets after a minute without using them. Should the time limit be exceeded, it is possible to extend it slightly via sheer willpower, but the wings will ultimately fizzle out, regardless of the situation. Reaching the end of the time limit is indicated by the wings slowly losing their luminescence until they fizzle out completely. The wings can be used to block attacks, but the damage will cause the wing timer to be reduced each time they are used this way depending on the strength of the attack blocked.

(Notably, if the wings are used while Ignite Mode is active, they are instead made up of darkness instead of light, taking less of an angelic appearance in favor of something more monstrous. Dark flames also wreathe the entirety of Hibiki's body, but this change is purely aesthetical. Her flight speed will increase, and the wings become big enough to cover both herself and one other person with it's protection.)

Description and Effect: Having started to take being a Dreamer seriously, Nene has finally manifested a proper ability. Using her wand, she can now manifest glowing magical energy that takes the form of... fish scales?

Well, specifically, mermaid scales, but whatever. With a wave of her wand, she is able to manifest a single large mermaid scale that will orbit around her and block attacks... though at E-rank she can only manifest one at a time. The scale is fairly durable, but still breakable with enough force.

Initially unbeknownst to her is the second property of the scales... being that if Nene herself strikes the scale, it will fire off as a projectile instead, either breaking apart into numerous smaller scales, or being fired off the way it is as one large projectile that is capable of ricocheting off of surfaces.

(She cannot use this ability while in her fish form, but any scales manifested before she turns into a fish will continue to orbit her afterwards.)

Description and Effect: Hanako can pull a random item out of his jacket a set number of times (3 times at E Rank, and increasing by 1 as it levels up), with the usefulness of the item depending on an RNG'd number-- 1-9 will yield infinite kokeshi gag/punishment items, 10-17 more normal and sort-of-useful-if-you're-creative items, and 18-20 Actually Helpful items (such as potions or a non-Sandglass weapon)! The RNG threshold will balance out more as he ranks up as well, but really, at the end of the day this is just a support/gag power than anything else df,nskjfdf
