EXPLORING DREAMS

The Dream Sphere is a place full of mysteries and for Dreamers, it's theirs to explore as they see fit. Exploring the Dream Sphere, experimenting with their powers and battling it out with Torments and Nightmares is how Dreamers grow their magic after all - and come on. Admit it. It's pretty fun. Players are, of course, free to goof around in logs at their own pace but for formalized investigation and exploration of the Dream Sphere, this is the place to do it!

Dreamers can investigate the Dream Sphere in two main ways; Excursions and Torment Hunts. All Dreamers are encouraged to take part in Excursions and Torment Hunts and OOCly, the process can be rewarded with points that can go towards... well, rewards!

EXCURSIONS

Excursions are when a Dreamer explores the Dream Sphere with the specific goal of finding and investigating new locations. They may find new and interesting locales or stumble across trouble in the making and take care of it.

Currently, these new locations will disperse and become inaccessible once the Dreamer leaves it behind, but characters will unlock the option to Stablize a location in an event in the near future, so they can permanently add one to the Outlying Locations page if they so wish.

It's important to note that, like Outlying Locations, Excursions also come with an element of Risk. You're heading out into the unknown, after all! You can indicate in your comment what Risk level you would be comfortable with, which will correlate with how far into the Dream Sphere your character is choosing to go. Some of this Risk can be mitigated by going on an Excursion with multiple characters (up to three at a time) but you still might run into some trouble and should be aware that your character could end up hurt or potentially failing out of the Excursion at higher Risk. Take care out there!

To head out on an Excursion, fill out the form below and submit it in the comments. The mods will reply with the results of your Excursion and what cool things your character may have encountered. You're free to leave things there... but! If you use the results of the Excursion as the basis for a log or thread and submit it as a reply to the Excursion result, you'll receive points! As with AC bonus threads, these completed Excursion results must be AC length and you can submit two per month. On top of this, each character can head out on an Excursion twice per month - though this is an OOC limit and you're free to play out and handwave other IC explorations even if they aren't officially an Excursion.

TORMENT HUNTS

Torment Hunts are the main method of keeping the Torment and Nightmare populations of the Dream Sphere under control. In contrast to Excursions, Torment Hunts consist of Dreamers going into known locations and hunting down any Torments that have spawned there. Without Dreamers to keep them in check, Torments would eventually form into Nightmares and so, Torment Hunts are the most proactive way of keeping peace in the Dream Sphere while getting to grips with your magic.

Like Excursions, you can complete Torment Hunts by filling out the form below and submitting it in the comments. The mods will reply with a result, taking into account things such as the Outlying Location's overall Risk factor and how many characters took place in the Torment Hunt. You're free to head out on Torment Hunt solo, or with others. Having friends along makes the whole thing safer, of course, but you don't need anyone else to join you - however, higher Risk locations will be much more difficult without the proper backup and should a Dreamer be unlucky enough to be overwhelmed while on their own, they will fail out of the Torment Hunt.

Once again, if you use the results of the Torment Hunt as the basis for a log or thread and submit it as a reply to the Torment Hunt result, you'll receive points! The above limitations on submissions also apply to Torment Hunts though you are, again, free to thread out unofficial Torment Hunts between characters just for fun.

Strategy: This is training for novices so likely the efforts will be a little chaotic. Zeke will have the novices practice with their powers and try teamwork, and only eliminate Torments himself if absolutely necessary. Otherwise the three novices will be encouraged to practice their powers and teamwork and find what's comfortable for them in terms of style and ability. Zeke chose the Glades specifically because Torments are rare and out of their element there, figuring that would be the place least likely to get anyone hurt or a bigger group than they might want. Also, this way he can include some lessons on finding Torments and tracking them as well!

Keywords: This is a training mission for the novices, with a Striker to handle excess danger and a Saver to help get them out of danger if need be. So the goal isn't to find something specific, it's to find SOMEthing and introduce the newbies to it! But a chance to find a really neat location would be ideal, something that helps keep the wonder in being a Dreamer and reminding them it's not all fight-Torments-fight-Nightmares-fight.

During their Excursion, Chaosbringer's group come across... a new location!

An atoll housing an enormous lagoon of ocean-scented sapphire water ringed by white sand beaches and glittering emerald trees that line the sand. Sky-grasping white cliffs rise high above the waves, offering pockets of shade to get out of the ever-present sunshine and provide some respite from the heat. Rather than seashells, the bone-white sand is littered with iridescent gemstones that catch the sunlight and give the entire island a shimmering rainbow effect. The waters themselves are clear enough that even the deepest parts of the lagoon seem to glow. If you're brave enough to dive deep, caves and tunnels full of glowing coral can be found that lead all around the island. This area of the Dream Sphere is almost completely devoid of Torments, though some are drawn here on the occasions that Dreamers are present.

Keywords: Though Dreamer Scarlet has been missing for ten years now, this team is setting out to find out just what became of her! Though the chances of her being alive and well are admittedly low, even just closure -- or understanding of what caused the disappearance in the first place -- would be welcome for everyone. This Excursion is looking for any signs, traces, or signals of Scarlet, in the hope of finding a trail and guidance for future searching excursions.

(And as unlikely as actually finding anything would be, they're not going to overlook the faintest possibility of getting some clue about Reverie either.)

During their Excursion, Chaosbringer's group come across... a ｎｅｗ ｌｏｃａｔｉｏｎ!

Under a sky tinged a perpetual hellish orange stands a desolate fortress, surrounded on all sides by a twisted, blasted landscape of jagged obsidian and rivers of molten lava. Making your way to the fortress is a miserable task – like Fury Peak, the temperature in this place is sky high and the air reeks of burning sulphur, making it hard to draw breath as you break deeper and deeper into the fortress' territory. The Torments here are particularly aggressive – vaguely humanoid figures made of living fire who have a nasty habit of trying to bearhug and broil you when they get in too close.

The fortress itself is towering and imposing, built from what seems to be bricks of pure obsidian that catch and reflect the eerie light bouncing around. The architecture is similarly off-putting – it may have been grand once but now it's begun to decay, many of its walls and and towers have begun to crumble and collapse, laying at jutting, unwelcome angles.

You make it to the door... but no further. While working out how to pry the door open and go deeper inside, Chaosbringer says Dreamer Crimson's name aloud and everything suddenly changes. The underlying tension of the dream reaches a boiling point and the orange sky is drowned by black clouds crackling with electrical discharge – then the doors of the fortress explode open to engulf the group in a blessedly brief torrent of raging fire before they wake up, having been forcefully ejected from the dream. In that moment before they wake up, everyone will have the same realization – the feelings pushing them back here are anger, rejection and revulsion.

Someone doesn't want Dreamer Crimson to be found.

Every member of the group will be unable to return to the Dream Sphere for one week following this Excursion and a sense of lingering anxiety will hang around for their first few trips back.

She's decided they're going to check the outskirts of known areas in the hopes of stopping Medium Problems from becoming Big Problems, so they'll be stalking any identified Torments. Then, Chaosbringer is going to Leeroy Jenkins the shit out of them, with La Pucelle backing him up with heals, cover fire, and orders from someone with a less...immediate....vantage point on the enemy. Keywords: Field trip!! Ai's dragging a bunch of newbies further out into the Dream Sphere to help them adjust to their new powers and learn how to properly make use of them. With the Experienced Dreamers acting as the de-facto bodyguards, the idea is to take the Novices out into areas of the Dream Sphere that would be beyond their reach alone to push their limits and get them out of their comfort zones. The general vibe is kind of a fun day trip out, but Ai-Doll will also be making sure they find places that have at least some Torment presence to make it educational too.

During their Excursion, Ai-Doll's group come across... a new location!

The Dreamers find themselves atop the central hub of a network of islands, floating high amidst a glittering twilight sky with no other land in sight. This central hub appears carved from moonstone and glitters gently in the light while countless bridges of the same luminescent stone radiate out from the center, connecting this central platform to all the other islands. The islands themselves come in all shapes and sizes – some vast floating palaces adorned with delicate spires and intricate carvings of dizzying celestial patterns while others boast cascading waterfalls, lush gardens bursting with vibrant flora and fauna, and yet more are carrying shining stone labyrinths of mind-boggling complexity. There are many Torments here, taking the form of shooting stars that streak down in meteor showers and swarm any Dreamers caught by surprise, but they're individually weak enough that with some good teamwork, you'll pull through.

During their Excursion, Ai-Doll's group come across... a new location!

As they enter the Dream, the Dreamers find themselves surrounded on all sides by vibrant colours and cheerful music and a flurry of balloons to herald their arrival – they've stumbled across some sort of carnival! The whole dream looks as though it's come straight from the most whimsical kind of picture book imaginable, with multicolour pathways lined with candy trees and carousel rides and attractions, adorned with twinkling lights and the promise of fun. The whole thing feels like some sort of toybox spilled out across the floor under a star-spangled sky. It's not all fun and games, though – Torments lurk in the shadows, some looking like clowns with exaggerated faces and others in disguise as balloons will burst and lunge out to attack when a Dreamer strays too close. Take care not to get distracted by all the fun or you may just be in for a rude awakening!

Keywords: Baby's first trip as a Mentor!!!! (Sort of. Unofficially. SHHH) Despite being an Experienced Dreamer, Mantle doesn't have much... experience... fighting Torments or Nightmares, so Hanako's going to show them the ropes with whatever they find in their travels! (Plus, getting to venture into new locations in the Dream Sphere is also A++ for the both of them too, so they're hoping to come across something fun or cool!) Cinnabar is along for the ride too, as a former Mentor themselves and to make sure Hanako's actually doing his job (debatable), so this is most definitely a bonding road trip between three Completely Normal Dreamers who have zero idea how to make friends but want them super badly 8')

During their Excursion, Hanako's group come across... a new location!

Drenched in otherworldly stillness, a foreboding, Gothic mansion comes looming out of the mists of the Dream Sphere. As the rest of the dream asserts itself, you realize that the mansion's grounds aren't just gardens but are a sprawling graveyard that stretches as far as the eye can see, crumbling gravestones haunted by Torments ready to give anyone foolish enough to go investigate. A horrible miasma lingers around the grounds and unfortunately follows you into the mansion once you choose to explore it. Inside, the place is dilapidated, draped in cobwebs and the contents of each room frozen in time. It's your classic haunted mansion, right down to horrible portraits of the imaginary inhabitants that always seem to be moving just out of the corner of your eye but snap back into stillness as soon as you turn to look...

The place is infested with horrible, spidery Torments who will lunge out of the shadows the second they get a chance. One of these taking the group by surprise results in Cinnabar being ejected from the dream, though not without taking it down with them. With Cinnabar gone, that leaves Mantle and Hanako, not quite aware that the miasma seeping in from the grounds is growing gradually more and more toxic...

Mantle succumbs first, ejected from the dream by the poisonous mist. Hanako lasts the longest, thanks to building up resistance via Cinnabar's poison, but eventually he grows sluggish and weak too and is set upon by a group of spider Torments that had been laying in wait and is ejected soon afterwards.

Our condolences on your Excursion failure! Every member of the group will be unable to return to the Dream Sphere for three days to one week following this Excursion and will find a nasty cough lingers in the Waking World for up to a week afterwards. As this was an Excursion failure, you are not eligible for any additional rewards but may still use this as the basis for a log/thread if you please and any threads that meet bonus criteria there are still eligible for submission.

Outlying Location: This is for the high risk hunt on the 18th, in the Reverie Necropolis.
Strategy: Two Savers because by god they're probably gonna need 'em. Ford personally is going to be being marginally less stupid than usual, if only because he figures he should try not to get his mentee absolutely destroyed on their first real hunt. 'He's going for a high risk bounty for the first one???' I said marginally less stupid. For once in his life he's going to advocate ranged fighting over getting right in there and, like, just punching things. He's got the laser gun for a reason.

Presumably it will mainly be up to Ai and Novvy to hold the braincell, though.

Outlying Location: Reverie Necropolis. Specifically from [ this world interaction.
Strategy: Dreamer Zeal is going to be immediately swarmed with an enraged horde of Torments after having dug into one of the graves to try to find out what's inside! That means she's going to be on the defensive for likely the entire fight, spamming Terra Shield and trying not to remain surrounded. Making lemons into lemonade, she'll totally be pulling aggro for her crimes, and if anyone can withstand a beatdown, it's Zeal.
Dreamer Chaosbringer, Dreamer Hanako, and Dreamer Sudo will be in the vicinity when this happens and rushing in to help! Chaosbringer will at first be thrilled at the chance for battle, and this will likely enthuse Zeal further, but if things start to go sour he'll try to hold the line while others escape. Dreamer Sudo is less focused on protecting Zeal, and will be taking stock of the overall situation, looking out for further threats and trying to warn people if they're about to get blindsided or ambushed in the middle of the fight. Dreamer Hanako will be slicing and dicing when he can get in close, and firing off orbs when he can't.
Overall this seems likely to result in Chaosbringer, Hanako and Zeal holding the front line while Sudo keeps an eye on overall strategy!

TORMENT HUNT RESULTS

During their Torment Hunt, Zeal's group... well, uh, they sure manage something!

Thanks to the sheer size and aggression of the Torment swarm, there's no chance of wiping them out entirely, but with good teamwork and keeping... relatively calm despite the chaos they manage to avoid a wipeout! Despite their best efforts, though, it eventually becomes clear that trying to hold the line will result in them all being injured and eventually, the Dreamers are forced to re-focus their strategy on getting to a safe place where they can return to the Waking World without issue. And they manage to pull it off!

Thankfully nobody is injured or suffers any ill effects but Zeal will find that for up to seven days following the incident, she is not able to return to the Necropolis – attempting to reach it will result in her failing to leave the Slumbering City at all and if she continues to persist in trying to reach it, she will be ejected from the Dream Sphere and be unable to return for three days.

Keywords: Kozakura is mostly just looking to Expand Knowledge from a businesslike attitude and sate a little more of her personal curiosity. Deep down inside though, there's still the hope that being able to branch out more effectively might yet somehow find Satsuki Uruma.

Shinsha is mostly upset and awkward and worried about making sure they're useful even while constantly surrounded by horrible poison.

At least Marisa has good vibes.

Kozakura isn't the best at social cues, but she remembers being worse off in high school so she'll at least make an attempt at being sensitive to Shinsha's attitude, if a bit gruff about it.

Keywords: This is another "let's find someplace that's truly awesome and wonderful" expedition. (It might have been looking for atoll again but welp!) What would double the fun is a place that's good for training. Mountaintop dojo or something like that?

During their Excursion, Chaosbringer's group comes across... a new location!

Nestled high atop a majestic mountain peak, sits an abandoned dojo – dusty and a little worse for wear, but somehow welcoming and inviting all at the same time. Actually getting there is a bit of a task - you have to follow a winding path up through the mountain that would have been treacherous for a regular human but proves to be an exciting bit of mascot platforming for a Dreamer – and the views are absolutely spectacular! Once you finally reach the top of the mountain, you're greeted by a grand gate that's had intricate symbols carved into it that, once opened, leads into a courtyard mostly taken over by a large Zen garden. The inside of the dojo is spacious, with a massive training hall just waiting for a bunch of Dreamers to cut loose and train! Keep an eye out, though – despite the Low Risk, there are still Torments here. Oddly enough, though, while they'll attack any Dreamers they see there doesn't seem to by any aggression in their fighting... almost as if they're looking for one last good fight before they wake from this dream.

As they enter the Dream, the Dreamers find themselves surrounded on all sides by vibrant colours and cheerful music and a flurry of balloons to herald their arrival – they've stumbled across some sort of carnival! The whole dream looks as though it's come straight from the most whimsical kind of picture book imaginable, with multicolour pathways lined with candy trees and carousel rides and attractions, adorned with twinkling lights and the promise of fun. The whole thing feels like some sort of toybox spilled out across the floor under a star-spangled sky. It's not all fun and games, though – Torments lurk in the shadows, some looking like clowns with exaggerated faces and others in disguise as balloons will burst and lunge out to attack when a Dreamer strays too close. Take care not to get distracted by all the fun or you may just be in for a rude awakening!

Keywords: Rhodonite is at least nominally responding to the Union's request for research data, so they're out for a place they can Stabilize; that said, she's also out for practice with her powers ideally without freaking out this time, which is something Draco is also wanting to work on, and La Pucelle is here as equal parts bodyguard and moral support, wanting to make sure nothing happens to them but also wanting them to gain that experience. Draco is the offensive element with the strongly face-tanking-oriented powerset, with Rhodonite providing defense and backup, and La Pucelle keeping them upright unless things go crazy. With only one Experienced Dreamer, they're wanting to keep a lid on things if they can help it - even La Pucelle can only do so much if they're overwhelmed.

The Dreamers find themselves arriving in the middle of a sprawling, overgrown walled garden with twisting, spiralling paths spreading in all directions from the dried out fountain at the center. The white stone paths are almost entirely swallowed by the overgrown vegetation and the true star of the show – knotted bushes of strange, gem-encrusted flowers that emit an eerie, otherworldly glow. Trying to follow the paths is a fool's errand as the thick mist that enshrouds everything makes it incredibly easy to get turned around... or to lose sight of each other. There are other dangers to be wary of as well – straying from the paths to investigate the overgrowth may result in a Dreamer being attacked by thorned vines or otherwise ambushed by the garden's Torments, serpantine creatures that lay in wait just out of sight before attacking with poisonous bites.

During their Excursion, Shadow's group come across... a new location!

The Dreamers find themselves in the middle of a clearing of what initially seems to be a forest of bizarrely smooth trees – once they look up, though, they'll realize they've found themselves in... a mushroom forest?! The air is thick with spores that make it a little hard to breathe properly but a long, winding path will guide them away from the clearing and out into the forest proper. Peculiar plants and flowers will spring up all around them as they walk, mushrooms bent and twisted into the shape of more familiar plants and the group will eventually realize they're being lead in circles. The correct path to take is to break out through the canopy to the tops of the mushrooms where a gorgeous blue sky and a whole endless expanse of springy, bouncy mushroom caps can be found. There are many Torments here, that (unsurprisingly) take the form of chunky, tubby mushrooms with teensy weensy feets who will come paddling out of the undergrowth to take a nasty swipe at any Dreamers they set their eyes on.

During their Excursion, Hanako's group come across... a new location!

As the dream manifests, Hanako's group finds themselves standing on a cool, damp expanse of sand and gazing out at the haunting sight of an enormous ship wrecked on the beach's rocks, weathered planks creaking faintly as a cold wind gusts and gnarled fragments of rusted metal jutting out from the wreckage. A huge hole on the side of its skeletal frame invites them to explore and as they enter, they find it's not in much better condition on the inside. The air is heavy and damp and the ship is full of half-rotted furniture, long since perished supplies and plenty of damage to the ship's foundation. Compounding any navigational difficulties is the fact that the ship itself just doesn't make sense – staircases lead to dead ends and doorways open to impossible places. Just to really live up to the ghost ship energy there are Torments lurking in every dark and gloomy corner, taking the shape of ghostly skeletal sailors who don't take kindly to intruders showing their faces.

Torment Hunt #1!

Strategy: Honestly, considering this is more of a combo Novice training trip (for Lisa) and new ability honing trip (for Amane), needless to say it might be... a bit haphazard? Hanako's been to this location before so he has an idea of what to expect re: the temperament of the Torments here, so he'll be using his Possession skill as a way to guide Rhodonite through the thick of them! She'll be mostly fighting defensively because she'll be (physically) on her own, but if things get too hairy (or some of the Torments decide to tag team in their fights), Hanako will disengage and help her out with his tried and true Hakujoudai + knife combo!

The goal is to get Rhodonite to the other side of the dojo where Hanako left something for her to retrieve, so... this is more or less a version of Capture the Flag, but super amplified lmao

Torment Hunt #2!

Outlying Location: The Fury Peak Torment Hunt Bounty on the 15th! (Because clearly this is going to end.... so well)
Strategy: Okay, SO. Ultimately, this group is already at a disadvantage taking the Torments head on because none of them have anything effective against fire (aside from maybe Cinnabar, who could poison them/paralyze them with gas created by heated mercury, but that would... also be bad for the non-Torments around if they're not careful), but they're also going to be split up by a random fissue/landslide that occurs when they're there! Fortunately (?), this is about the time that Hanako discovers he has a new ability to possess people (or at least be a mental guide, at this level), so he's going to see if he can try to reunite Cinnabar and Victorious, get them to lead the Torments into the fissure-- and then all of them can shoot down some rocks to crush the critters in the hole for good measure.

It's not a good plan, but... it is A Plan, so??

With this being such a high Risk hunt and the gang being so poorly matched for the Torments in question, they quickly find themselves outmatched and outnumbered. However, it's not a total disaster! With the experience of his past failed Excursion at his back, Hanako is able to identify when things are going south and with a combo of his powers and some good teamwork, the gang manages to clear a path and cleanly retreat without anyone being ejected from the Dream Sphere this time around.

During their Excursion, Chaosbringer's group comes across... a new location!

The Dreamers find themselves arriving in a mesmerizing candy wonderland that looks as though it was pulled straight from the brain of a particularly sugar blitzed kid. Rolling hills are adorned with an array of oversized candy trees and the meadows are dotted with sugar flowers in a myriad of colours and, you know, flavours. As the Dreamers venture deeper, the landscape undergoes a gradual transformation into a candy mountain range covered in powdered sugar with spun sugar snowflakes dancing on the wind. Clamber high enough and reach the top and you'll find peaks makes entirely out of ice cream in any number of flavors. There are Torments here... technically. In practice, they're just colorful pinatas that explode into chocolate and candy once they take the slightest hit.

Strategy: Chaosbringer and La Pucelle are both interested in testing their limits and the strength of their leveled powers, and are consequently out to engage something particularly perilous. They'll approach this sensibly and tactically. The point is to engage something(s) that would be a challenge from its strength and power, not handicap themselves by doing dumb things.

Though the two of them are Experienced enough to handle themselves in a place like Fury Peak, it's still a relatively high Risk environment and that means unexpected dangers can occur at any turn! While the two of them are successful in seeking out a powerful horde of Torments to take on and do hold their own for a good while, an unexpected earthquake causes a fissure to open under their feet mid-battle. This turns the tide of combat in the Torments' favor and eventually, the Dreamers are forced to retreat.

During their Excursion, Ai-Doll's group comes across... a new location!

When the dream manifests, Ai-Doll's group finds themselves standing atop a platform at the edge of a luminous bridge under a sparkling sky full of swirling auroras. At the end of the bridge stands a vast, ornate castle suspended atop soft pink clouds with a pair of enormous doors cracked just so as if inviting the Dreamers to come inside and explore. As they step inside, they enter a colossal hall with walls seemingly made of starlight and a glass floor peering down at the clouds and stars below. The castle's layout is both elegant and enigmatic, with corridors that shift and change - a door might open onto a beautiful impossible garden or an ornate ballroom only to change its mind and allow you into a sparkling treasury or a beautiful music room when you next go back. As pretty as it is though, this is still a Dream and Torments of course have found their way here – huge armored constructs armed with even huger weapons and figures with starry eyes, shifting gravity to immobilize and trap their targets.

Upon entering the location, Chaosbringer's group finds themselves in... a High Risk Excursion! Thankfully, with some good teamwork, they manage to complete their objectives!

Rain is smashing down from the sky in the Abandoned Dojo, making the trip to the top of the mountain even more dangerous than usual – visibility is almost non-existent and the ground under everyone's feet is loose and slippy. Even worse is the fact that the path up the mountain is lined with Torments, all looking to challenge Dreamers to a battle to prove they can make it to the top!

The terrors don't stop when they actually reach the peak, though. Squatting in the courtyard with its coils wrapped around the dojo is a full blown Nightmare taking the form of a horrible venomous snake. Cinnabar takes a nasty bite from the thing and Glasswing gets clobbered by its tail but with their combined teamwork, they take it down and Stabilize the dream!
